I want her to stop. It's so nasty for her to spit in everything hacking into cups and our best crystal. I buy plastic cups she still goes into china cabinet and takes out stuff. Everytime I offer her anything she has to go do this or she will pick up a bottle of water in her room and spat in any thing close. I bought a small trash basket and gave her Kleenex. She urinated in the trash basket so I took it out. It's probably nothing I can do about this spitting But this new behavior is another one to add to so many awful things.

Does she seem like she is having a problem swallowing? That would be my 1st thought.

If all is well in the swallowing department, I hope this phase passes quickly.

Unfortunately, when a person with dementia becomes obsessed with something as your mother has with spitting, there isn’t much you can do. She can’t be reasoned with because her broken brain no longer allows her to reason and she doesn’t understand that what she’s doing is distasteful and gross. She is beyond understanding right from wrong.

She needs constant supervision. If you see her heading for the china cabinet, grab a cup or a tissue and tell her “No, no, Mom. We don’t use those glasses for spitting!” Hopefully, this obsession will end soon. If not, you may want to explore alternate living arrangements for her.
