My mother has never been bi-polar, even though she has had short bouts of depression in her past. She has started acting depressed for a 1-3 days and will sleep a lot. Then, she suddenly become hyper-active and manic for a day or two and not wanting to sleep at all. Is this something normal for dementia patients?

Today she was on constant repeat mode, re-asking questions constantly within seconds of asking them the first time even after I have answered immediately. Nothing has changed with her meds, so I just wondered if other's have experienced this too.

Agree with above posters to mention to her doc and check for a UTI.

After that, with dementia, it seems like you just never know what is coming next. There is no "normal".

Good luck.

Whenever a new behavior seems "sudden" it is best to get her checked for a UTI, which is very common in elderly woman and often has no other symptoms other than behavior and personality changes. Antibiotics will help clear it up but you will need to be on guard for future ones. Later in life our physiology changes which is why they become more common, plus the wearing of incontinence undies plus less-than-optimal hygiene. Left untreated a UTI can lead to sepsis, a life-threatening condition. So, best to discount this as a cause of her change in behaviors.

She has started acting in this way - recently? If the pattern of 1-3 days down and out and then a day or two's hyperactivity is a new thing, report it to her main doctor. It may be advisable to check a few things out and/or adjust medication; but in any case whenever there is a noticeable change it's best to get professional advice.
