My mom is 71, she fell and hit the back of her neck around 3 months ago, then she had a UTI and was very confused and fell off of her porch backwards onto concrete, gave her a concussion, bruises on ribs and back. When in hospital she began to say random words and sentences that didn't make sense, they said it was "sundowners" and it would go away. In the morning it would be better, but by the time we got her home she was mumbling random sentences/words, couldn't stand up on her own, would just go right to sleep. Then found her in the morning sitting on the toilet with underwear still on, mumbling in the air, just mumbling and her head in her hands. Doctor said nothing is wrong, but there is something terribly wrong. Please help me figure this out.

mwright876, I agree with you, something doesn't sound quite right.

Curious, did the hospital give your Mom any type of physical therapy? When my own Mom [who was 97] had a head trauma fall, she was in the hospital for a few days as a scan showed she had a brain bleed; plus physical therapy tried to work with her to try to get my Mom to learn how to stand up. My Mom developed delirium, which is common for an elder in the hospital, where she was very confused, hyper nervous, and scared.

Eventually the hospital transferred my Mom to a live-in Rehab center to see if the therapists there could help my Mom re-learn how to walk. Unfortunately Mom's age was a huge factor as she wasn't healing very quickly.

Time for a very much needed second opinion as your Mom is much too young to be going through this. Keep us up-to-date.

Yes, I agree with Becky -- you must take her to a specialist.

Holy mackerel! Was this all three months ago, or did she fall again recently? Did they do an MRI? Did they treat the UTI? Head injuries are no joke, so I would get a second or third opinion and get an MRI and/or a CT scan. It could be another UTI, I suppose, so get that checked as well.

Yes, they did all the testings, no UTI, MRI & CT Scan were normal, but something is wrong, this is NOT normal.

I would get her into to see a neurologist. If necessary via ER or ask her regular physician for a referral.
