Certain eye diseases can cause this, most seriously glaucoma and macular degeneration (my mom was actually prescribed indoor sunglasses because of AMD). Get her eyes checked.

She should go to a ophthalmologist, not a optometrist, for a check up. Wearing sunglasses inside too long will leave her eyes so used to the dark (like living in a dark cave) that she will have even more trouble adjusting when she goes outside.

Thanks everyone! Mama saw her primary care Doctor but he had no idea.  We will make an appointment with her opthamologist.

I agree about consulting with an ophtalmologist. Stress just how sensitive her eyes are. I used to have that problem too. At times, I had to wear 2 pair of sunglasses at once when going outside! As it turns out, I have a condition where there is a nodule on my cornea. It causes the light to reflect in way that can cause a lot of light sensitivity, PLUS, there are other conditions that could be causing it. I'd also check with her Primary, as some medical conditions can cause it too. It's quite disturbing to have this problem. Treatment, including surgery for my condition has helped me tremendously.

My mother is 88. She has all sorts of eye complications as well as Parkinsons - MD, and advanced Glaucoma. plus dry eye. . I do believe the meds they take for Parkinsons (the carbidopa/Levadopa) make them much more sensitive to light. Also, I have found mine likes to keep her eyes shut a lot. Any abrupt changes in light- such as going outside triggers hallucinations for mine. One more thought is that they are older and side effects can be stronger
