When I originally placed my wife in MC, she was very angry, resentful and difficult for the staff to control. She smashed family pictures, and damaged some room fixtures. It was recommended that she be placed in a psych facility to modify her behavior. In only 12 days, she was returned to MC and never exhibited those aggressive behaviors again. Although antipsychotics are only recommended as a last recourse, they are effective in certain situation. So, yes, psych treatment can be very effective.
He's just experiencing the aftershocks of inappropriate behaviors.
A psych eval can go a long way in knowing how to treat him, going forth. It's nothing to be ashamed of, it's just a test, so to speak, of what state of mind he's in.
Probably a check for a UTI will be done (those stupid things are often the start of unusual behavior in the elderly) and barring that being the case, the rehab will decide where he 'lands' next.
Remember, while this is YOUR LO, his rights end where somebody else's safety starts. He can escalate quickly, so you are actually lucky the rehab stepped in and are evaluating him.
Mom did the same thing after hip replacement. An eval showed an 'allergic' reaction to the pain med she was on. Stopped that med and replaced it with something else and in a day or so, she was back to normal and finished her rehab with no complications.
