IF he is non weight bearing you need a lot of help preparing for him to go home. I don't know his age but a wheelchair will be a part of his home life until he can weight bear.

Good advice about getting in touch with his on campus social worker.

Shirley, you posted many similar questions on this forum and we don't know if you're reading the answers and if the answers are helping you.

It seems like you need someone there where you live to help you make these decisions and manage things with your husband. It's been recommended by people on this forum that you speak to the social worker at your husband's rehab facility...have you been doing that? If not, why not?

Is there someone in your complex who you can talk to, like an administrative person in the office? (Leisure World in Silver Spring, Maryland).

Or do you belong to a church or synagogue that has a pastor or rabbi who can help you make decisions? Please call these people since they live near you and can be more helpful, and meet with you in person to get your questions answered.

Again, can you please post a response briefly to this question so that we know if you're reading them? Wishing you much success in finding the right helpers.

Good luck. If he can't put any weight on the foot he will be miserable. He'll have a hard time going to the bathroom, as an example, especially getting up after sitting on the toilet.

We don't realize how important our feet are until they are injured and hurting.

We really can't give you the answers you want. The physical therapist has to release him and so does the doctor. You can request the doctor call the foot doctor.

You now really need to talk to the Social Worker. Its her job to help you figure things out. You need to explain to her what you may need. She can set up homecare if warrented.

Glad to hear ur husband is doing better.

Sounds like he's bring a bit of pill. He wants to come home, but not riding in a wheelchair? Is he embarrassed? Angry?

Depending on the severity of the foot surgery, maybe he can just use crutches, but those are actually a lot more dangerous than you'd think.

Is he going to be wheelchair bound when he stays home? Or can he use a 'scooter' once he's actually in the house?

I had a major foot surgery in July and it took 16 weeks to heal--for 8 weeks I was non-weight bearing and stuck, stuck, stuck in this house!! I did get very depressed, and that's normal, but no fun.

You need help moving him, if he can't put weight on his foot. Wheelchair or no, you'll need help.

Ask the Dr or the SW at the NH to steer you in this. I imagine that he no longer needs the level of care at Hebrew House, and that's why they're sending him home.

Does he have any cognitive lapses? That could be playing into his pushback about the wheelchair.

Shirley, have you looked into help if he comes home? You cannot be expected to be the sole support for getting him into and out of the wheelchair, or indeed to be any sort of mobility assistant at all. The chance of you injuring yourself will be great.
