I have been my husband's caregiver for over 10 years. He has a degenerative spine disorder and used a scooter at home to get around. Now aids use a lift to move him from place to place. He believes he will be discharged in about two weeks. I will need assistance when he returns home. I cannot afford private agency aids. He is a Veteran but the VA offers very limited at home assistance, approximately 10 hours a week. I have had no success in getting information about Medicaid at home care. I would appreciate any information anyone can offer. Thank you.

I think your DH is better where he is. You will never get the 24/7 care he is getting where he is. If he is a 2 person lift you will need 2 aides because one will not do it.

Medicaid at home is different than placement in a facility. A lot depends on your state and if home caregivers are available. You might get 1 person for a few hours maybe 2 to 3 times a week. The usual premise for Medicaid at home is for help with bathing and grooming or to watch someone. Everything may be already thrown out of the window once more than one person is needed, especially for a lift. You should talk with the social workers that you will be alone or with very little help prior to that discharge to determine the needs. However it looks like he will need long term care as they cannot release him as an unsafe discharge.

Have you spoken to the social worker at the rehab facility?

In some States, Medicaid will pay for round the clock aides. Others places, not. You need to talk to the SW at rehab and/or the local Area Agency on Aging to find out what might be covered.

Also search sites like care.com since it is one of the sites that has photos of potential caregivers.
