Yes, the peapod mats work like a charm. The larger ones are 3 feet by 5 feet. They can be be placed on top of the bottom sheet and washed daily or as often as needed, up to about 500 times. I used them with Luz on everything. The layer the person may contact is more of a terry cloth material. They worked on both types of discharge. Just rinse off any solid waste, let it drip dry and then wash and dry. I had no need to strip the bed and wash the sheets. Not cheap to buy but save a lot in the long term. Good luck.
As well as having several of the pads Katiekate mentions I bought the kind of mattress protector that furniture stores often sell when you buy a new mattress, although it is waterproof it isn't stiff plastic, the the top is like a terry cloth.
One thing to be aware of with any kind of washable pad is to avoid chlorine bleach, it will ruin the waterproof properties.
Look at adult mattress pads. Just about every drug store sells them. They are about 4 feet square. Water proof. the best part is that you can take it off with the sheets and wash it and drop it into the dryer along with the sheets.

Hi there! What I have for my father is a cover that has a plastic lining in it but is also covered with a quilted cotton layer. It's much more comfortable then just plain plastic as its much more absorbent and wicks away moisture. Oh course I put it under his bottom sheet. You could also put one of those plastic disposable pads just between the sheet and the mattress cover so you don't have to wash it all the time. They sell them at Boscovs, Kohl's, Sears. Don't buy a cheap one cause the plastic will not hold up to washing a couple of times a week. I hope this helps you out! It helps me to help others who are in the same situation. LucreeLuv, I was overwhelmed last week at the variety of mattress protectors available. All I could remember was ones my Mom used when we kids were little and they were like horrible plastic or vinyl. I saw that kind, but it seems this would be uncomfortable to sleep on. I did see several like you mentioned....the lining inside and more normal on top. They were fairly reasonable in price, too.
