I have been taking care of my husband who has dementia for the last 7 years. Things have steadily been going down hill for the last year and half. I am now considering bringing in a live in but not through an agency. Does anyone have an idea how much this would cost. Thank you in advance for your help.

It is entirely dependent on where you live. We can’t tell you a specific rate because there isn’t one, it downed where you live. You will need to provide room & board and pay a full salary at at least minimum wage for every hour worked plus overtime. You’ll need to get an employer identification number & take care of the payroll taxes and have adequate insurance (Workman’s comp or through your home owners insurance) should your employee become injured on the job. You’ll have to abide by state and federal employment laws-so you’ll need to make sure the employee is given adequate sleep time and regular breaks and time off.

I see it's now corrected and your post is viewable here. I don't have a complete answer for you, but I do know that if you are not going through an agency, the person who becomes your live-in may technically be your employee at that point. You'll want to make sure you understand all of that and what laws may pertain to you. Not sure about payroll tax withholding or what would happen if the person got hurt on the job. Things like that. I don't know if you have looked into that yet or if you're just beginning. It may or may not be a huge issue, but you will want to know ahead of time.

Hewdays - I saw your other post, but it had ended up in the wrong spot. If I understand correctly, your husband has dementia and you are the primary caregiver who is looking for live-in help but you don't want to go through an agency. Right?
