Hi, my grandmother has stage 5 Parkinson's she was placed on Hospice in November. Recently she sleeps most of the time. She can’t move at all now even has a catheter placed. She does take sips of water and eats maybe about 2 bites of baby food (she can’t eat solids anymore). Her vitals are good. We did notice she has a stage 1 bedsore that is being treated. It’s really heart breaking seeing her in the condition she is. She moans almost all day. She has to squeeze our hands to answer our questions. My question is is any one going through something similar? Or if someone has gone through it how long can she live in this condition. Obviously we don’t want her to go, but the way she is living is not a good quality of life. Any advice or comment will help me in these moments thank you 🙏🏼

Nola,
She's in the Lord's hands now. And you're right...no more pain and suffering.

May God comfort you and your family in this difficult time. Remember the good times as a tribute to her.

I actually have recording on cassettes of songs she use to sing to my daughters. And we do always start and end our day with biblical versus. Thank you for the hugs.

They say that they can still hear you even when everything else is fading - perhaps you could play gentle music, read religious verses or just tell her all those things you want her to hear. ((hugs))

UPDATE:

just wanted to give you all a update.
As of yesterday my grandmother did stop eating she spoke about two words. She is not even swallowing water now. Blood pressure is high we are giving her morphine every two hours due to irregular breathing at this time. Will keep you all posted.

I am so sorry that your family has to travel this journey.

As hard as it is, no one really knows. They wouldn't have allowed hospice if they didn't believe it was less than 6 months. That is one of the main considerations for hospice.

If she is not drinking or eating much that is usually a sign that the body is shutting down. Do not force anything, it is not comfortable for the patient to have undigested food and fluids in their stomach. As hard as that is to watch, it is the best for her.

May she pass peacefully and may your family receive grieving mercies.

Hugs!

I doubt it will be years if she is only eating a little baby food and a few sips of water. Like said its hard to tell. My daughter thought my Dad would battle for every breath. Dr. said he wouldn't live the weekend and he lasted five weeks until Thanksgiving. He got tucked in for the night. Everyone went to bed. Mom woke up at 6:30am and he was gone. Went in his sleep. Some people tell loved ones its ok to go everyone will be ok.

I am so sorry you’re having to go through this. How difficult it must be to watch her decline. My FIL’s Heart just gave out one day. But my mom declined slowly over a matter of months. Truth is, everyone passes on their own time and no one can predict if she has a matter of hours or days. Have you spoken with the Hospice Nurses? They’re monitoring her and are experienced so they can give you a better idea.

Again, I’m so sorry. Prayers and hugs to you all.

Thank you so much for you response. It means so much to get a response back. We have spoken to her hospice nurse and she did let us know when the time is close she would start making daily visits and make us aware. I guess my confusing came from other family and friends coming over to visit and we get a lot of different things said. Some have said her day is coming closer other say she can live years in this condition. To be honest that breaks my heart thinking she can live years in this condition. Thank you for your prayers and hugs.
