FIL is verbally abusive to MIL who is handicapped due to open heart surgery and then stroke and hip replacement. Getting more agitated daily. He doesn't sleep so she cannot sleep because he never stops talking. How do you go about getting someone in for a geri psych evaluation?

Film's agitation may indeed be part of his dementia. Out of control blood sugar is " just" part of diabetes. There are meds for both.

No cure, just amelioration. Either find a geripsych, or find a geriiatrician who understands meds.

Family is just my hubby and I. Fil (hubby's stepdad) hasn't seen or heard from his daughter in over 20 years. BILs are useless didn't even call for Christmas. Dr says it's just part of dementia. We have a caregiver that's moving on property soon. Just thinking he needs some meds to settle him down enough to let them both get some much needed sleep or At least rest. Some days are better than others. Thank you all

The family needs to sit down and come up with a realistic plan going forward, a man with dementia needs to have caregivers for himself, even with the help of a geriatric psychiatrist he will never return to his former self and he isn't capable of looking after his wife any more. Dementia isn't just being forgetful, it is a group of diseases that slowly but surely erode a person's intellectual and physical abilities due to irreversible, progressive brain damage.

Mil has been handicap from stroke for 10 years. He is her caregiver now he has dementia. He has always been difficult but she has learned to deal with it until now. He thinks she's his Mom and is constantly looking for her. "Where's my wife" when he does know she's there he is telling her to clean house (unable) then she's fat and lazy or cheating on him. He was standing over her hollering in her face the other day. He is getting progressively more aggressive. The Dr and his nurses know Bob very well we were just there last week because he had a bad skin tear. Nurse said he had called 10 times the day before. But now I cannot get them to call me back. They live alone for now but working on that situation, long story that I covered on another post.  Someone is with them daily

Good ideas...I just called a hospital and asked about getting my mom assessed. I had never heard of Geri Psych but they make it simple for you (a very good thing since I was completely out of my element!). Some Geri Psych units have a preliminary assessor come to the patient home with a questionnaire and to observe the patient and family members too.

My mom was attacking my dad physically and verbally, hiding his important things, hiding her own things, rummaging through drawers at 3 am, losing her cane, cup, glasses, slippers, repeatedly, called the sheriff to my parents house telling them my dad is trying to kill her, on and on. Now, on the new medication and in a structured environment at AL, she’s 100% better and happier too. She was diagnosed with moderate dementia and depression.

Look online for a Geri Psych near you!!!! Good luck!!!

Is your MIL his only caregiver? Can you arrange a respite stay in a facility while she recovers?

Make an appointment for him. Take him to the doctor. Type out your concerns beforehand and hand them to the receptionist, asking her to have the doctor read it before the appointment.
