I would call Home Depot, Lowes even WalMart to see if they will deliver and install. Fans are usually given out for free but not A/Cs. In the meantime, get a fan and blow it over ice.

"One final way to cool a room down is to use ice alongside your fans. It might look like a strange solution, but it can be very effective for cooling the air quickly. Position a shallow bowl of ice, ice packs or a frozen hot water bottle behind your fan, and it will soon spread the cool temperatures around your room." I read the ice can be put in front to. If you have a humifier that would help with humidity.

Keep doors and drapes closed. The hotest part of the day will be about 5/6pm.

Go on Nextdoor.com and make a request for help with a low-cost or free (used) unit and help installing it. The people on that intranet are your actual neighbors and not anonymous.

So your mom is 66? Is she on oxygen? Is she mobile? does she drive?

If she is truly caught with no resources, have her call APS. Adult Protective Services. If she is truly in need they will have suggestions.

I’ve heard they are investigating and providing resources for the truly at risk. Since she has a daughter who will take her in until the problem is solved, she has resources many in extreme heat don’t have.

Has she called for AC service yet?

Is she computer literate, have a credit card? she could set up the task rabbit account and no it isn’t free. it’s a possible way to get a job done when there is no one else to do it.

Tell her to drink water and loosen her clothes.

The extreme heat can addle the brain at any age unless one is accustomed. I’m not insensitive to extreme heat but mom doesn’t sound like she is being reasonable.
Perhaps there is a reason for that.

Take a nice slow breath yourself and let us know how it works out.

Local council on aging may help. Get her meanwhile to your home until you can figure this out.

Many cities have an emergency line. Like 311 or other such number. That might help. (I just googled it and the number in Houston is 311)
Many cities also have cooling centers for Seniors.
You could call the NON EMERGENCY number and see if the call center is aware of any help that might be available.

I don’t know of any resources that help with these situations other than Go Fund Me pages and possibly a church that has outreach ministries for the elderly.
