My dad is 88 years old and 240 lbs about 5 feet 4 inches. He has great days, and he has days he's up all day seeing imaginary people or talking. Any ideas?

Does your Father have visual hallucinations? Does he have Glaucoma? If yes, get him to a Glaucoma Specialist immediately. When my Mother had visual hallucinations, she saw things, she did not hear sounds. While in a rogue Facility in Personal Care, the night Nurse was not giving her the right drops as prescribed by the Dr. She was angry and arrogant. The facility was angry I caught her messing up and cut back my hours so I would not be there when drops were being given. You can look it up on the internet, "Charles Bonnet Syndrome." Also, have your father's PCP check you Father for UTI or other ailment that could cause the Hallucinations.  We moved Mother to a different facility. I am her Caretaker.  I give her her eye drops.  Her condition is stabil.  She has not had Hallucinations for the 10 months we are at the new facility. 

I work in dementia care and hallucinations are extremely common. I have residents who do this exact thing with great days followed by rough days of exit seeking, pacing and hallucinations. I would definitely have him seek medical attention if this is a new behavior to also rule out other medical conditions.

I would take your dad to the doctor and have his blood work and medications reviewed. I wonder given his weight if he might have diabetes and either his sugars are too high or too low causing him to act like this. It is a concern and I would try and follow up with a doctor.

You don’t say if Dad has dementia, but it sounds like he does. I can assure you that seeing people that aren’t there is one of the most common symptoms of this disease. Don’t argue and tell him they aren’t there. Just go along with it.
