His body may be shutting down as the disease progress. It is time to speak with hospice. Because of COPD and him sleeping, it means that he is comfortable. No narcotics would be needed and the natural processes of death will take over more and more each day. Hospice should provide you with supports to understand what is happening.
I went through this wth my brother. The nurse advice was spot on. They also provide a process where you call them rather than 911 upon death which could be quite traumatic
