I was able to slide them in and he would bite them into place but the last two days they just float around in his mouth. When I try to put them in place he gets upset. Any suggestions or tips would be helpful.
It sounds like the dentures no longer fit properly, which is at the root of the problem. Is there any way you can get him to the dentist for a new set or for a reline? If not, and if they're not fitting properly (and if you can't use Poligrip to help hold them in place), then I'd stop putting them in dad's mouth. It may take a minute for him to acclimate to eating w/o dentures if he's been using them for years, though, so be sure his diet is comprised of soft foods for a while. Yoghurt and puddings, soups, things that he won't have to chew or else you may face choking hazards (God forbid).

I've worked with a lot of people with Alzheimer's and have found this to be a somewhat consistent theme (especially because of weight loss). I had a client with Alzheimer's who would take her teeth out to eat. She did just fine. The assisted living gave her softer food and she was able to keep her nutrition up. If they are too big because he has lost weight, they could cause sores on his gums. This could become a bigger issue that could lead to infections. If having them in causes him to get upset, don't force the issue.
As MJ1929 stated below it may just be time to start having all his food pureed so he can easily eat his food with out his dentures in. If they are not staying in place properly you will run the risk of him not properly chewing his food and perhaps even having his food going into his lungs causing aspiration pneumonia, which in most cases is deadly. It's time to make things easy for all involved, and have his food pureed. That way he can still get the nutrition he needs and you won't have to worry about his dentures not staying in and worse.
