Long story short. I am now 26 years old ready to leave the nest in few years. My dad is a widow he just don't care about the house I grew up in no more. What can I do? I have 3 other siblings, sad part is I am a year older than my sister who is 25 years old and moved out 4 years ago.

Find Care & Housing
Hi, Kenya. Does your dad have any physical or mental issues that prevent him from keeping things tidy, or is he just kind of used to letting things slide because other people clean? Or, perhaps he hoards stuff? Whatever his problems, it shouldn't prevent you from moving on with your life.

If his problem isn't hoarding and he has the money, would he agree to a housecleaner coming say every other week just to make sure things don't get too out of control? That might be easier than stalling your plans until a 60 something/70 something guy learns to like housework!

When you get your own place, do you expect to keep it cleaned up? Maybe you could practice where you are. Do you pay rent? What is your current contribution to the household?

Getting Dad interested in the cleaning may be a lost cause. If you can't/don't want to do it, hiring it done makes the most sense.

Is "not caring" about his house part of a larger problem of depression? When did his wife die? Does he take an interest in other things around him? How is his social life? Is he retired? If so, when did that occur?
