I currently live in New England and take care of my mom. She's 84 with dementia but is pretty healthy. I will, of course, be there for her, but I'm also anxious to move to a warm climate and start a new life. I hope to retire within the next year so I 'll have time to plan. Am I crazy?

Is your mom moving with you? Such a big move can be very difficult on the elderly especially one with dementia. Give her time to adjust to the new surroundings. It may be difficult for her for a while.

I know too many people who move to FL and then come back. Sure it is warm in winter, but it is deadly hot in summer, lots of mosquitoes and snakes, little reptiles getting in the house, a constant battle with mold on the lawn. That urge to move is often an unrealistic desire to find youth and happiness. People enjoy the first winter, hate the summer and feel isolated from everything familiar. Think long and hard before you jump into it. Tornadoes and Hurricanes are harder to deal with than a foot of snow.

Yuppers, at least six different venomous species, over 90 different kinds plus a problem with giant snakes, pets that were released and are living well. This includes the Burmese Python and the Green Anaconda, which can reach 25ft long and big around as your thigh. Fortunately the invasive Fire Ants kill some of them before they get large enough to swallow your dog.

I lived in Florida 15 plus years. I think, if I remember correctly, I saw 1 snake during that time. It was 6 inches long. If you live in the middle of the swamp then you might have problems with snakes, bugs and other creepy crawlies. Orlando is not in the middle of swampland... the only thing that may bother you is mice, actually 1 mouse... Mickey!!

Humidity is bad, especially for the hair!! LOL!! I know if I could have persuaded my mom to go back to FL with me she would have LOVED IT! Especially the warmth and being able to actually get outside all year long vs being cooped up in a house for months on end. This is why hundreds of thousands of people migrate to FL during winter.

Every state has it's natural disasters, bugs and other such unwanted things....I'd personally rather battle a few bugs in nice weather and take long walks on the beach than stare at a foot of snow for 5 months :)
