Has anyone experienced little bits of tissue or skin sloughing off in his/her mouth? It started shortly after my father died, so I assumed it was stress related. But in doing some research tonight, I learned that skin sloughing can be caused by sodium lauryl sulphate in some toothpastes. Checked my tube and realized it was a different product of Crest than I normally use. This one is Pro Health Advanced. I don't brush my cheeks and try not to get toothpaste anywhere but my tongue, so I'm not sure how any contact has occurred. Thoughts or similar experiences, anyone? There's no pain or bleeding.

GA, the only time I've experienced small bits of skin coming off the roof of my mouth is when I've burned my mouth with hot coffee.
Also, a screaming hot sauce can make your mouth skin crinkle.

I believe there are "natural" toothpastes like Tom's.

Thanks, Sue. I've also used another "restorative" toothpaste but never had any sloughing.

I don't eat anything spicey, so that's out.

I will check out Tom's; I've seen the products in drug stores. The only other toothpaste I've found to be really problematic is Colgate; in one tube I found 4 small pieces of plastic. I threw out all the Colgate tubes and haven't used it since.

Thanks for taking the time to answer.

GA, I have a similar problem. I take a med that causes severe dry mouth. I have blisters that slough off, cracked places. I’ve used Tom’s all natural toothpaste and the mouthwash. They help. There is also a gel by Tom’s that is soothing.

Becky, thanks for your answer as well. That must be painful, to have blisters in your mouth! Two points for Tom's - I've put it on my shopping list!

Do you put the gel inside your mouth as well, on the blisters?

I'm going to keep track of what I eat, just in case there's something in the food. I also switched toothpaste today; so far, no sloughing.

I was just thinking - almost all of the lotions, etc. I buy are from herbal suppliers, so I'm not used to the complex chemicals used in commercial goods. I'm wondering if I'm just too sensitive to them. I'm also contacting my current herbal supplier to see if she makes a toothpaste.

Thanks again..

GA Yes, I put it on the places that seem to get dry and blistered the most. The more moist I keep my mouth the fewer problems I have.

I've had that with Oral B mouthwash. But I've assumed it wasn't anything being sloughed off that I wasn't better off getting rid of anyway?

Becky, thanks for the updated advice, and CM, thanks for your input as well as the very practical way of viewing soughing tissue. That makes good sense. Now I'm wondering if I put toothpaste on my hips, hypothetically, could I slough away that extra fat?

Seriously, I guess that mouth tissue being sloughed off isn't as dangerous as I had initially though, and coincidentally, nothing has happened since I stopped using that variety of Crest toothpaste.
