Mother with dementia is living in a group home. Is Memory Care facility a better fit for her?

My mother in question is not at risk to leave the facility and has no behavior issues. She is intimidated by the current care workers at a group home and is not receiving proper care. The lack of care is the reason a Memory Care facility is being considered. In addition, she complains she does not have her own private bathroom facilities at the group home.

It depends. My mom was in memory care at a large facility. Her behaviors became unmanageable and she was kicked out. She was on hospice at the time and they strongly recommended a care/group home. It was a more homey atmosphere, lower caregiver/resident ratio. It worked much better for my mom.

If your mom has settled in as good as can be expected, leave her be. A move will cause another decline. And what if it doesn't work out? All you can really expect from a facility is that mom seems contented,in the best possible case.

If it is not broke don't try to fix it.

It’s very difficult to answer this without more details. Is she acting out? Have they told you she needs more care than they can provide? Is she wandering? Are they not caring for her properly and meeting her needs? With more info, perhaps we can help.
