Hello - my 74 year old mother is in the final stages of cancer (multiple myeloma), and this past week, her kidneys failed. She was transported by air to a hospital in Boise, ID, where they have been caring for her. We have no family within several hundred miles of there, and no financial resources available to keep someone there with her all the time. Currently, she is receiving dialysis daily, but we are being told by the doctors that she may not be a candidate for long term dialysis due to her advanced stage of cancer. I would like very much to have her transferred to a hospital in the town (or near vicinity) of where I live in Bend, Oregon (about 315 miles away) - is this possible, and if so, how do I go about coordinating it? I have no financial means to help, and she is on a fixed SSN income of $800.00/mo, and has medicare only. Any suggestions would be incredibly appreciated.

Talk to the hospital social worker and ask specifically about hospice care.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom. If you can't get her moved perhaps your family can contribute funds for at least one relative to travel to where she is and be with her during this time. I traveled several hours to be with my aunt before she passed from kidney failure. I sat with her in hospice at night while her husband and son came during the day. I'm very glad I was able to do this. We had some wonderful conversations and she really was glad I was there. She was gone in just a few days once the dialysis was stopped.

We transported our daughter. It was totally our expense and our risk to take. Pretty expensive and unless you can afford to rent an RV and have people to load her and unload her, don't do it.

After a hurricane, my Inlaws had to be evacuated. They ended up hours away from home. I tried to find a way to get them back home. I was trying to help my SIL who was also evacuated and was living in a hotel and trying to check in on them in a hospital rehab. I was told I couldn't go get them. Looked into hiring an EMS worker to go with me. It was decided to be too risky. MIL had developed MRSA after a surgery and couldn't be moved for awhile. FIL had a head trauma after a fall. There was a lot of confusion going on. Some of the family thought they should stay where they were until it was easier on them to travel. FEMA was finally lined up to transport them home ( because of the hurricane) and FIL died the morning of. MIL died one month and one day later. We got her home the day FIL died and got the funeral home transport to bring FIL home a few days later. Transport is very expensive. I had some regret the way my FIL died all alone. Even though the SIL was in the same town she wasn't at the hospital. MIL was down the hall.
It's not all about the day we die. It's about the days we lived. It comes to an end and often it's inconvenient but it comes to an end. A big hug to you and your mom.
