My mother now continues to suffer from reoccurring CDIFF because the memory care facility gave her an antibiotic for her frequent UTI's. Anyone else?

Ms Madge, hospice will definitely still care for your mom, at least the company i'm working with...in fact, they were the ones to suggest a smaller home care facility. They said my mom would receive better care because in these smaller communities, they are only caring for 3 people. AND they cost less!!

That is a urogynecologist that specializes if female urinary tract issues. The problem with recurrent UTI's in my mom was chronic diarrhea and her inability to properly clean herself. I expect this will eventually be the cause of having to move her to a nursing home. She had seven UTI's in a year while still living at home. Memory care does not have the staffing ratio to constantly monitor bathroom habits and other behaviors.

Would the smaller residential home have a hospice waiver ?

I'm thinking of going from Big memory care to something smaller too but am afraid there's no nurse to dispense her meds in one

I use clorox wipes all over her room every time i'm there. I'm going to try a probiatic drink, though. The antibiotic is working because mom is eating now and retaining food and making her stronger. We had a GI appt but we cancelled it because the hospice care was afraid it would be too invasive for her...to wait in a waiting room and then be probed. We are thinking of putting her in a smaller home care...they are private homes that take 3-4 patients and it's more one on one care. For as much as we spend at mom's memory care facility, these homes are less expensive and provide better care. I'm so disappointed in BIG memory care facilities. They are money making organizations that have a matrix of how many people can be on the floor so that they can make more money. All of this extra money drops straight to their bottom line. So, these executives are getting richer and the needy are getting poorer. Shame one them.

Are you able to visit? Have you spoken with the physician that serves the facility and is ordering the antibiotic? Some thoughts about your visits -- Bring a liquid probiotic beverage (dan active is one example). Bring a flavor she would like and have her drink it. This may help with the lining of her GI system. And, make sure she is hydrated. Be there at meal times and see how they handle fluids. Have her drink beverages while you visit. Sometimes you have to do some of the pushing as you have the time, interest and patience -- more so than staff! Get you Mom into a wheel chair so you can go to a far part of the facility, perhaps outside on a nice day. She may enjoy the change of pace and the ride! Bring some lysol wipes and wipe down EVERYTHING in her room and bath room. Do it each time you visit. Bring a dispenser of antibacterial stuff. Use it your self and have her use it. The place where my MIL is at is constantly out of the antibacterial stuff. Dispensers are always empty!! And, MIL (with some memory issues) doesn't wash her hands after toileting or anything else. It is part of the dementia issue. I stand there with her hands under water and pour soap on them and make her rub good before I take her down to lunch. I then make her use the antibacterial stuff as well. Then I toss all of her towels into the laundry and (literally) find some clean ones on housekeeping carts. These places are germ infested and though hubby tells me I am wasting my time, I feel like I am at least trying.

Get her to a gastroenterologist who understands how to treat C-Diff. She may also need to be seen by a genito-urologist to find out why she keeps getting UTIs. It might be lack of hygiene, but sometimes there are also underlying physical issues that contribute.

Who is her attending physician ? Memory care staff cannot even give out vitamins without a doctor order . My mom seems to have gotten several UTIs in 4 mos of memory care - I suspect because they don't bathe her - she also had a bad fall from dehydration and vomitng with a UTI
Based on my experience - memory care is no care and is very expensive to boot
