First - please accept my condolences on the passing of your Mother. I hope you will be at peace with the loss soon.

There's no easy answer. Did you Mom have a locked box or drawer full of paperwork? Did she have a separate savings account? You're going to have to do a little searching in her home to see if she had an insurance policy or stock certificates. SS should have paid for the full month of January if she was alive during the month and I'm a little surprised that they've taken February already (it usually takes 2 months for them to catch up with the death). You might want to look a little more closely at the account.

If you fail to find an insurance policy or money stuffed in the mattress or jewelry you can pawn for a reasonable amount, talk with the funeral homes to see if they are flexible with financing or payment plans. My Mom's funeral allowed us to make payments and really didn't demand much from us or charge interest.

Good luck. It's not an easy situation to handle anytime - but when you're battling grief at the same time it's hard to even think.
