My mom stays in fron of her television watching about the end times of the world and obsessively talks about it. She is so depressing. Some of the stuff she says sounds so crazy and ignorant. Everything is about destruction, doom and gloom and the meaning of 666 and the like. She doesn't like getting involved with people and has no hobbies, friends, or interests. She seems so cantankerous and wants to make everyone else believe and climb aboard with her POV or she gets angry. She has the means to travel, but won't do it.
She became very angry with me when I told her I no longer wanted to talk about all of her prophesy talk or conspiracies theories because it depresses me. She got angry and threw a book down and stomped her foot and told me I was a terrible daughter and bad mother for keeping the truth from my son.

HELP!!! I need help so badly! I've told her life is so precious and short, we need to embrace each day and ENJOY LIFE! Get out and get a hobby, take friends to tea, invite people over and chat, ANYTHING but sitting and watching television all day AND all alone. It only gets her depressed and obsessed.

Beachinmama, this is fairly common for people as they get older. My mother has gotten into watching things about Revelation. With her I think it is her fear of facing death. If the end of the world does happen in her time, at least she will be taking everyone with her. Death would not be so alone. I tell her that I doubt that she or I will be seeing the Second Coming in our lifetimes, that we will probably die before it happens. She says that I can never tell, which is true, I guess. But all probabilities point toward the world continuing for a while.

That people turn toward thoughts of The Revelation in their late years leads me to think it is a way of thinking about the end of their own world and what lies beyond the grave. Are they going to go to heaven or hell? Is there really such a thing? Death has so much uncertainty and Revelation addresses the final judgment and what happens to people who believe or don't believe. Personally I can't figure out what the book is even talking about, though it can be fun to speculate.

Does your mother find comfort in thinking about the end times? Is she anywhere near her own personal end times? Maybe she needs to talk to a spiritual counselor about her concerns.

Can you get her to a daycare centre. my mum is same BUT not that gloomy but she is watching SKY news alot which is depressing. talk to a nurse about getting her out. Also maybe get her some puzzle books? my mum is ok in that she likes to knit? I feel for you my mum is getting so bord lately shes on a list for daycare and I will shove her big ass on that bus! she calls it the "blunder bus" well she needs to go to this centre as they do games for memory etc.. my mum is very intelligent so that can be an added problem as shes frustrated. If all else fails maybe get her to talk to a shrink as if my mum dosnt change she may need one. SO hard how do you drum it home to them that they are going to die and that they should be out doing things??? do they really get it are we wasting out time? chin up we can only do our best and keep saine in the meantime! My mum if left unattended watches "jeremy kyle" "jerry springer" and Dog bounty hunter?? and this woman is intelligent??

First of all, get her an anti anxiety or anti depression medication. Second, put parental controls on the TV to prevent mind pollution. Her depression can easily become outrage and violence without proper treatment.

ROFL! Love that. I had this vision of a bunch of stoned elders sitting in a circle at their nursing home with their pipes and bottle of Boone's Farm.

Thank you, Jessie Bell and kazzaa. Yes, I think you probably hit the nail on the head with my mom fearing her own death, Jessie Belle. She has mentioned it several times that she believes the rapture happens BEFORE she dies. I just don't think she wants to face death. It's probably a form of aloneness and abandonment for her.
I try to share books or quotes from some of the eastern philosophies and meditation techniques to calm her, but she thinks its all evil.
And, I agree, kazzaa, we don't even want to go down the Jerry Springer road! *gasp*
Thank you so much for your insights. I think I will call her church and ask someone to call her and invite her to get out and get involved with a care group or something of the like.
I so appreciate you input.

Thank you, pstiegman, for your input. I do appreciate it. My mom is FAR to stubborn to ever take any meds for depression. She doesn't think she's depressed. She lives alone and I couldn't put any parental controls on her TV. Believe me, I wish I could. I would only let soothing nature sounds, relaxation techniques, and very positive and mindful programs allowed.
I am concerned about her anger and paranoia she seems to be exhibiting.
