Mother in law refuses nursing home, is there anything we can do?

My MIL is 90 and showing signs of dementia or Alzheimer's. She has always been stubborn and negative, even things her family dies to help her or to benefit her. She is a very negative person. Her forgetfulness and lies are such now that we feel a nursing home admission will be coming. We have durable Power of atty. When the time comes, if she physically will not go to a care facility, is there any thing we can do? I am certain she will not go.

It is the Medical POA (healthcare proxy) who has authority over where the person lives (under certain circumstances.) Faithgram, do you have that in addition to the durable POA?

You need to have her evaluated. Have the doctor declare her incompetent. Then the POAs come into effect. You do not need her OK to place her.

If she has not been declared incompetent to make her own decisions a POA cannot force her to move. It would take guardianship to be able to do that.
