My mother in law is in Knoxville,  She is living in an independent living facility.  She has 3 children, but we can't afford to pay for the facility. What do we do?

Tanda, the AgingCare deleted the website address, but it's knoxseniors. If you go to their website, you can click on Programs at the top. When that page opens, scroll down to Services (bottom section) and you'll see the program (Senior Citizens Information) there. Good luck!

Tanda, is your mom in touch with her Office on Aging? At ours, they referred us to housing resources. They should know some of the options that might be available to your mom. Here is their website: knoxseniors

The Senior Citizens Information and Referral Service lists various areas they can help seniors (eg affordable home repairs, Meals on Wheels, etc.) that could help your mom to live in the community. Housing is listed as one of the areas where they could help. The equivalent in our community has been very helpful over the years.

It is really good that you are starting to think about this now. Unfortunately so many states are stretched thin and there are wait lists for affordable housing and waiver programs. Hopefully in your area there will be some good options for your mom.

It doesn't sound as if she is in need of a nursing home, or even assisted living to be honest. So you need to look for government programs for the poor like section 8 housing. Start immediately as waiting lists for section 8 approved housing are looooong...years sometimes.

She gets around with the help of walker or scooter. She has diabetes II; neuropathy due to the diabetes. Other than that she does pretty good. Maybe a little forgetful, but not bad. Not sure if doctor would ok a nursing home.

Unfortunately, medicaid, which is a program to pay for medical care for those who have no funds, does not cover independent living. If she has no medical problems she will need to apply for something like Section 8 housing.

If she does have medical issues, and a nursing home or other facility could ben ordered by her doctor then medicaid would be your solution. She needs to apply for Medicaid (or someone who is her POA needs to do this for her).

Can you give us a bit more info about your mom in law's condition?
