Can mother-in-law change her medical power of attorney?

She has been in a nursing home for 2 years? I am her medical POA and every time she gets upset she wants to change it. Now she wants to have a friend who lives out of town. She has some dementia. What will happen if she has her friend change it. She now says she wants to go back to Assisted Living...there is no way she could take care of herself. She was previously in an Assisted Living.

We went through something similar, mom said she was moving back to her house. It's important to alert the Head Nurse that this is not happening, it is a delusion. Ask them to document her dementia so no further POA can be signed.

As long as she is competent she can change her POA. This doesn't mean that the ALF will accept her. She has to have certain capabilities before the ALF will take her. If she wanted to move and was competent and accepted by the ALF, not even a POA could prevent her from doing it.
