Both my Mother and Step-Father are applying for Medicaid. My mother is in an Independent living facility and he is in a nursing home.

On Friday, our DDHS counselor told me my mom will be considered a community spouse in addition to having Medicaid and Medicare. I was very surprised by that. I did not know she could keep some assets while still qualifying for Medicaid. Does anyone know if this is true? I have emailed my DHHS counselor already, but she only returns e-mails on Fridays.

Find Care & Housing
Rules vary widely from state to state. Basically they can keep a home and one vehicle. BUT the asset becomes subject to MERP (Medicaid estate recovery program) when they die. Check the rules for your state.
