Follow up. Mom's not admitting she had a bowel movement. She blocks it out completely. We get into the biggest argument because of that. Don't know what to do. Don't want to overdose her on laxative teas and pills. She even shows me when she had a bowel movement at the time she is happy. However 2 hours later she says to me 'give me a laxative pill I can't go to the bathroom" then I say Mom you went this morning after breakfast and you even brought me in the bathroom we were so happy you went, BUT NOW SHE DENIES IT. I'm at my witz end! What can I do? The other stuff she forgets, she will admit - end of story. But the bowel movement is another situation. I need your advise on what to do!

WillyB, it sounds like dementia is in play. Find a placebo that you can give her and pray that this period of odd behavior is brief!

You might have her checked for UTI or some other infection, but, I agree that it sounds like cognitive decline or dementia. Perhaps mention to her doctor. I recall that in the early days, my LO would report things about herself that were absolutely not true, but, she would swear to it. She really believed it, though it was false. i learned to not argue, go along with it and just take it in stride. Or course, you might avoid giving her meds, if she doesn't really need them. The placebo might be a good idea, if the doctor says yes.

No matter how much you remind her, it probably won't help her remember. IT's frustrating, but, may fade over time.

Especially as this fixation is different from others in that with other things you can talk her round, I'd have her checked over to make sure there isn't really something wrong. It's possible that even though her bowels are in fact functioning well, some other problem in the region is making her feel as though there's a blockage - piles, a prolapse, all the undercarriage ills that flesh is heir to. Maybe even just wind, in which case you could think about changing her sitting position or seeing if something in her diet is setting her off.

The worst that can happen is that there's nothing there and you still have the false belief to deal with. But then at least you've got peace of mind that you're not ignoring a real problem.
