My Mom (98) with dementia slept all day! Any suggestions?

My Mother got up at 6:30 am this morning as my husband and I were still sleeping. She was disoriented and talking jibberish. We told her that it was very early in the morning and to please go back to bed......she did.....but she has been sleeping ALL DAY LONG? I kept going in periodically to see if she was up and let her sleep till 2 pm until I went in her bedroom and asked if she was alright and needed anything to eat or drink. She said she was tired and not feeling well. Asked her if she wanted me to call the doctor but she said all she wanted to do is sleep. I touched her head, and she was not running a fever. Is this normal at this age? She has slept late many times lately but never the whole day and the next day she was fine. Any suggestions?

My Mom is also sleeping longer hours. Three years ago it was about 12 hours a night. She is now up to 14-16 hours. When she had her flu shot, the high dose variety she slept for the better part of three days. Then back to her nomal 14-16 hours.

Sleeping hours increases CAN be an indication of an advance of the dementia. I have heard that when people start consistently sleeping 20 hours or more a day they are in the final stage. That was true for my husband.

For your own information you might want to track her sleeping habits now.

Have you considered having her evaluated for Hospice?
