UTIs are nasty, nasty things. When my mother had one, this normally very shy and polite lady became a little demon. While in the hospital, she attacked the nurses twice and me once. She had to be tied to the bed for her own safety and other’s. This happened very quickly, over the course of a few days. When she was placed in a nursing home, the staff and I decided that she would be tested every month.

I'd discuss it with her doctor to ensure that she is not in physical or mental pain. I might also inquire about Hospice.

Has she been checked for a UTI or other acute illness? ALZ does not usually progress so rapidly, but then some other forms of dementia do and it is possible to have more than one (mixed dementia). Is it still doable to keep her at home with a caregiver? I managed my mom for a long time after I had to feed her and she stopped walking, but when she no longer had the ability to even stand to transfer from her wheelchair to bed - or toilet or shower- it all became too much and I had to place her in an NH.
