Mom slept through the night only to wake at 6 and take medication then right back to sleep and slept til 10am then went back to sleep in her recliner til 1:30 when I got her to eat something and then she basically went back to sleep waking a couple times for medication and to go to the bathroom. I worked this evening and the caregiver told me she went in her room after eating half of her dinner and went back to sleep. She was very disoriented, more than normal. Normally she stays up until 11pm but she was sound asleep when I came home at 9:30. This is very unusual for her. She will nap on and off during the day and then be awake in the evening when we watch a little tv. The night before and yesterday were tough days for her, physically and emotionally. She has Parkinson's and is 5th stage dementia. She had a lot of stuff up about her childhood and her mother. We talked last night about her mom and she seemed to come to some realization or maybe even some healing around it all. I figure she is just exhausted from it all but it is so unusual for her to sleep like this. She just now got up to use the bathroom. She is 91. Is she getting ready to go? What is your experience with this?

About a year ago, mother went from being up most of the day in November, watching some TV, going to some activities, to sleeping most of the day in December. She has vascular dementia. A few months later they put her on comfort care only. They (ALF staff) get her up for meals (in a wheel chair) but she sleeps the rest of the time most days, If she has visitors she stays awake . longer in the day. It was a marked change that happened pretty quickly. This is characteristic of vascular dementia. They decline step wise, not gradually.

I think it may be early to see a pattern, but if this continues, it may signal a decline. I am not familiar with the progress of PD. If not probably she is exhausted from the emotions she has been experiencing.

I just did a little reading on line and excessive daytime sleepiness does occur in some PD patients.

As the holidays approach, it brings up wistful memories of days gone by. Help her reminisce about the brighter ones. She's wishing she was busy in the kitchen and hosting a big crowd.

Thanks, but I don't think that is the case. Her childhood memories are really rough. I think she is trying to heal some wounds. The sleeping so much is not like her at all, not that much.

Thank you, golden23. She seemed more herself today although her mind took a step downward. She has been steadily declining this year but especially since June. The PD stayed consistent for 2 years but in recent months has new symptoms and we had to increase her medication. It's often hard to tell if it's anxiety or PD symptoms. Thank you for sharing your experience.
