Since I first posted I have done some more research. There are plenty of products on the market for skin protection but they are to my mind incredibly expensive. Many of the ingredients seem to be coconut oil, olive oil and shea butter. I think I would try something cheap which you are already doing with the zinc oxide. olive oil and baby lotion. read the ingredients on the expensive stuff and make your own. Antibiotic creams are fine but avoid the steroid cream and ointments because they are absorbed through the skin. contact CarolLynn on this forum she has a wealth of knowledge on natural remedies. Ask your Dr and see if your local hospital has a wound care specialist

A nurse at the hospital gave me the supplies I needed for my mom. There was a routine of cream, spray, powder, and something else, but I don't remember the correct order either. Just know it wasn't just one product that did it all. We also had an inflatable pad on her hospital bed at home that would take the pressure point off one certain area. Sitting for a long time in her wheelchair was just as bad as laying in bad all the time.

zinc oxide used to be the gold standard but I believe there are better barrier creams available now. Feces are very corrosive to the skin so washing off when you change her is very important. Maybe try asking your pharmacist what he/she recommends and find out what is used round colostomies. Try and keep her off the affected area turned from side to side and change her very frequently. Do a search for colostomy care.
