My mom is still living independently with her cat is getting pretty forgetful, but blames it all on the pills. How can I know?

She has a badly deteriorating spine and is on heavy meds for pain. Her doctor just retired and she hasn't seen the new one yet, not till next month; besides, he won't know, because he will only see her a few minutes. Any suggestions?
