In the hospital, we would sometimes connect the ostomy to a longer drainage tube, to a collection bag that would hang from the side of the bed. It allowed a much greater volume of urine to drain, so didn't need as frequent emptying, or start to leak like the smaller daytime bag would have. This will only work if the patient is aware enough to not try to walk away without the bag.
The problem you described is not necessarily the pouch seal but the fact that your Mom is unaware/confused about this device on her abdomen. Try using the same techniques you use for a toddler to keep their hands away from the diaper . . . use a spandex "tube top" that you sometimes see girls wearing across their breasts. You can also find some at ostomysecrets that have a pocket inside for the pouch (just a little more expensive). I would also recommend you locate a WOC Nurse (ostomy nurse) in your area to help you with more ideas. (www.wocn.org) There are alternative pouching as well that may be helpful. Good Luck
You may need to change your pouch more often if you drink a lot of fluids. Always empty the pouch when it becomes 1/3 full. Do not let the pouch fill completely. A full pouch puts pressure on the seal and may cause a leak. The pouch may also detach, causing urine to spill. Optional: Apply a skin-prep wipe (such as Skin Prep or All-Kare) to the skin around the stoma, and let it dry when changing the wafer. For extra seal, apply tape to all four sides around the pouch or wafer, as if you were framing a picture. You may use any brand of medical adhesive tape. Place your hand over the stoma and the pouch or wafer for about 30 seconds. The heat from your hand can help the pouch or wafer stick to your skin better.
