I've stopped fighting that battle with my Mom! Since her dementia has advanced she doesn't want to wash her hair either. She's never washed in while showering she says she doesn't like the water running down her face. It's winter here and very cold she doesn't like her head cold. You can use dry shampoo if she let's you.

It's all part of the dementia! Don't worry she's fine. Once a month is fine in my opinion. You have to pick your battles.

BoniChak just Google dry shampoo. I got to the Walgreens website and they have a bunch listed. Some brand names are Nexxus, Batiste, Kenra, Giovanni, Tresemme, Garnier Fructis...so lots of them available.

In my childhood almost all of the mothers, even low income, had their hair done at beauty parlors, once a week or every-other-week. They did not wash it between visits. The daily hair-washing that many of us do in the shower was a totally unknown concept. Many of them are now in their nineties, apparently none the worse for lack of daily hair-washing. :D

I'd go with the dry shampoo, but not get too wrapped up in doing it very frequently.

When I was in high school we used to sprinkle baby powder on our hair and comb out. The powder absorbed the grease from my greasy head and also smelled good. Before buying expensive dry shampoo you might want to try baby powder. If she tolerates it wonderful!

my mom was of the generation where they has hair once a week. I am passing this along that mom still does this.

I've heard talk before about "dry" shampoo, but can't find it at the drugstores. Does anybody have a brand name, so I can ask my local store to order it?

Nursing Homes send you to the showers once a week. That's enough. Have her MD send an occupational therapist (OT) to your house to show you how to safely bathe her.

Suave makes a great dry shampoo for 99¢. My 84 yr old mom has dementia and doesn't like her showers or hair washed. Her caregivers don't have to battle this way.

My mom only gets her hair done 1x a week at the hairdresser for as long as I can remember.... I don't think 1x a month will hurt her as long as she is not sweating or putting product on it... ? Maybe you could try the dry shampoo on her once a week or, if she protects, at least in the middle of the month 1x. Then it would be like it's getting 'clean' every 2 weeks or so.
