My mom has moderately severe dementia and peripheral neuropathy which has left her unable to walk.   She was admitted to a rehab facility but will stay long term.  When we visit twice a week she does the same. This is really affecting me emotionally. Any suggestions or advice?

Trice, I feel so bad for you. It is heartbreaking when they beg to come home. I don't know what the long-term prospects are. Maybe you can tell her that when she gets better so she can walk, then maybe she'll be able to come home. The way things are, you're concerned you wouldn't be able to take care of her well enough. I think having hope makes things a bit better. If it is going to be longer term, she may adapt and settle down soon. That happens often after someone gets used to their new place and routine. I hope it happens soon for your mother. It will make things easier on both of you.

Maybe you can ask the nurses what the best visiting schedule would be to help your mother adapt. They may have some good recommendations. They probably know better than most about what works for their clients. Let us know what happens. So many people face this same problem.

My mother's vascular dementia caused her to have terrible anxiety, almost a constant sense of dread. About EVERYTHING. Even while in her own home or at ours. No amount of reassurance, soft music or anything else made any difference. Antianxiety and antidepressant meds did. They give her the peace of mind and th he ability to get the assistance she needs.
