for the past 3 days mom has been on a rampage. Accusing me of stealing all her money and meds. I can't talk any sense into her. I ended up losing my temper which I didn't like. Now she is emotionally and physically exhausted. I'm trying to get her into dr but can't get her in until june. Also we are going back to hometown where I think she will be more comfortable. I wish I would have neverover here, but what's done is done. I have dpoa over her but I'm at my wits end. Is this normal behavior?

Take her to the er. She may have a uti. In an elderly person, a change in mental status is an emergency.

It is either of two things... a new stage of Alzheimer's/Dementia [your profile says she has that].... or it could be an urinary tract infection [UTI] which can produce the same type of symptoms in an older person.

If possible, take your Mom to an urgent care center, someone who can see her immediately to check for that UTI... or take her to the ER.... if it is an UTI, you would want that cleared as soon as possible.

Wow cecehawk.. when I read you topic I thought... yep, they are all crazy, and so are we sometimes! how far is along is Mom ( I assume she has ALZ and this is not sudden and new behavior?) My dad had a sudden horrible personality change towards the end.. very dramatic. And forget "talking sense" into him! Good luck and give us some more info please

No. And don't wait til June. From what you are describing, she is having delirium from some underlying infection or illness, for which you can take her to an emergency room, unless this is really not much different than her chronic state. Delirium is dangerous.

Well, then she will get upset because you are bald. Private message one of us and we will send a wig. :-)

Well, she isn't REALLY fine, and her dementia, which might be vascular or Lewy and not Alz, is stepwise getting worse. If the ER could not find anything that hurts her, or an acute stroke or heart attack or something else beyond the treated UTIs, a non-emergency appointment with a good geriatrician or geri-psych or neuro specialist who is fully aware of what is going on and not taken in by showtiming may be just the ticket.

I guess the other piece of cheap advice is to try to avoid arguments, just reassure as possible, redirect, realize that between cognitive loss and vision and hearing loss you almost can;t help but become paranoid. Moving anywhere might be nothing but a "geographical cure" which rarely works - she will still have dementia and sensory impairments and still won't be able to be reasonable.

One of the reasons im moving back to our hometown is because she has a goof repoir with the drs there, that she has seen for yrs. When i moved here with her in october after my dad passed i did not know how difficult it would be to find drs and how hard it would be to get her into see one. She had a uti about 2 months ago previoys to recent one and i tried to get her in, they wouldnt under any exception see her. I took her to urgent care they wouldn't see her because of her age they said (89). I ended up taking her to er. They dont seem to realize the effect a uti has on an elderly person. After this recent trip to er they wanted me to make an appt for her to be seen within a week. Well guess what they wont see her till june. Its a joke. Im just at a complete loss. I know the drs in my hometown will see her asap or if they cant they will call in antibiotics for her until she can be seen. Like i said at a loss.
