What is the moaning about?

My Mother is in the later stages of dementia and has started moaning alot.
She moans when she sits on the toliet, in the shower, at the table, in the bed, in the car. Is she really hurting or just thinks she is suppost to moan? When I ask why she says, she doesn't know. How do I determine if she is really hurting and needs help? I don't want her to hurt, but I just don't know.

I know if I make the same noises, it is almost like a 'tension releiver', try it, make the noise they are making.... it's almost like a 'mantra', this may have nothing to do with why they do it, but try it and see ....

I wish I knew, too. It is new behavior for us. In bed my husband's noise is a cross between a moan and a snort, and it is at regular intervals, like hicccups. The other night he also talked out loud several times. (Without his dentures in I could not understand what he was saying.) He has also been moaning during the day, and does not seem to be aware of it. It does not appear to be related to pain.

I wish I knew. My mil does the same thing and I don't even think she realizes she's doing it. She doesn't do it much while she's in bed, mostly when she's being pushed in her wheel chair - and especially when we're in the doctor's waiting room.
