Mom reports the rehab where she is recuperating is mean and ignores her. I know it is true because she is very complimentary of some staff, but I cannot catch it and/or it is really not reportable (tone of voice, snapping at her, etc.). She calls me crying saying she is so tired of being treated that way. She says every time I call to address it, it only gets worse. What do I do to transfer her to a different facility? Do I need to call Medicare? She also has supplemental TriCare.

The answer is yes, you can have Mom transferred. Call another rehab and see if a bed is available. Medicare will just stop paying to one and start paying the other. When u get that set up, then you contact the rehab she is in and ask that the doctor discharge her. If they won't you can remove her AMA.

Rehabs are not prisons. You don't even have to go to one if you don't want to. I know, they call and say "we are sending your LO to rehab at blah blah place" and you can say and the patient can say NO. Its an option. Sometimes a good option but for my Mom who only needed to get her strength back after 4 days in a hospital, I would never do it again.

Why is Mom in. Could her therapy be done "in home".

Call the ombudsman and report the facility.

If they are acting worse because of complaints than they need to have the state involved. Totally unacceptable.

Find the facility that you want mom moved to and they will set up transportation and help get the move done.

Be sure and tell the ombudsman that you are moving her and you need their help to ensure that her records are sent in a timely manner. I had to actually stand over the stupid girl that was supposed to send the information to get my dad transferred, one excuse after another until I did this. So you will have to go there or have the ombudsman do it.

Best of luck getting her moved with no bs.

Your mother is going to need to supply you with names; they are required to wear tags; and with details. It is otherwise so nebulous in a he-said, she-said. Help her have a pad and keep a diary. You may want to consider the camera angle as well; I think that the administration needs to be informed of this. Not certain. Wishing you good luck.

I complained when my mom was in rehab about one particular LPN that deliberately gave mom a double dose of her Parkinson’s meds, so she wouldn’t have to make a trip back to her room for her final dosage. The crazy part is that she told mom exactly what she was doing. Mom asked her if a double dose would harm her. The nurse said no, and mom took it because she saw the nurse as an authority figure, but it bothered mom and told me about it the next day.

I realize that nursing homes are understaffed, but there is no excuse for that kind of behavior. This was long before Covid so they didn’t have any Covid issues to deal with.

Anyway, I didn’t have a name but the NH keeps a log of who is on duty. I felt the DON and social worker handled the situation well. They didn’t allow that particular nurse to go into mom’s room for the remainder of her time in rehab.

This nurse was given a warning about what she did. She wasn’t fired. It is a shame that they are always short staffed. I would hear the nurses and aides in the hallways speaking about pulling double shifts, so I realize they are exhausted and that leads to poor judgment at times.

I made the decision to call the pharmacist to inquire if a double dose would place mom in danger and the pharmacist told me not if it only happened once but she encouraged me to report the incident because she said that this nurse could be doing this to other residents, so I felt that I should report her. She did confess to double dosing mom and it was written on mom’s records and also placed in her employment file.

Now, I don’t know if every situation would be handled as well as the NH that mom was in. Or if the situation would have been handled differently if it had not pertained to meds.

It may be worth a try for the OP to request a meeting. Hopefully, they will accommodate her in the proper way. Having said that, nothing surprises me anymore. I don’t think any of us are shocked all that much these days.

Other than reporting it, can you place security cameras in her room to document this said behavior, because as you know a picture is worth a thousand words? Without solid proof, I would imagine it would be hard to get the answers you're wanting, as it's their word against your moms.
It's a shame you and your mom are having to go through this. I hope it all works out.

Report this to the director of nursing and the social worker. Ask to have a meeting to discuss the details of what your mom is complaining about.
