You know, I've heard that any cell phone can dial 911 even if it doesn't have a SIM card and isn't hooked up with a carrier. I'm not sure how that works, though.

Joe520 that is good to know. Someone was telling me if you are on a limited income you can receive a cell phone for just 911 service, but I do not know how to tell you to apply.

There are home-based units that will work up to 600-1000 feet outside your apartment, but not in the city (too many walls). What you probably want is a cellular based medical alert system. One like the MobileHelp unit has one pendant you wear inside and another one you use out of the house (much better quality than the $9.99 per month unit from LifeStation, and cheaper). For the best deal, look at the 5Star Responder from GreatCall. It's a medical alarm that works anywhere you can get a signal, it's not ugly, and the responders know where you are by GPS. They also help you out if you're just in an uncomfortable situation (not just emergencies).

I have life station for my parents. For an extra fee they have a LifeStation 911 Phone that you can carry with you. The minimum service with a watch is app. $29.95 per month, and then I believe the phone is around $9.95 per month. I do not know if you can just have the service for the 911 phone.
