I now do the finances for my parents and the amount of mail they receive from Medicare, Supplemental insurance, doctors, etc..is staggering...I don't know how my poor mother did it! How long do you keep the Medicare Summaries and the EOBs from supplemental insurance? They also get a monthly report from their prescription program. I was thinking just keep a years worth of everything and then shred it? Thanks

I don't keep it anymore. My mother's income is below the level of being taxed, so we don't itemize. I've never needed the mountain of paperwork that is sent. We check to make sure the charges are right, see if she is anywhere near "the gap" in prescription care coverage, and save only the important things. This rarely includes anything from her insurance companies.

If you are itemizing and deducting medical expenses, then keep it for three years in case they question the deductions. Otherwise, what JessieBelle said.

I do throw out many of the pages of the EOB. I just keep the drugs list and the appointment/expenses pages. Paperwork reduction, my foot!

Thanks.. I agree there is so much waste..it drives me nuts! What I've started doing is saving any pages that are blank on one side as scrap paper...I've built up quite a supply already.
