My mom has been in a nursing home for a few months now. Medicare paid its part and then she qualified for Medicaid to take over. The nursing home wants me to sign over her Social Security and pension checks. What if she has a lot rent on her mobile home among other bills? I’m trying to sell it but it may be awhile. In the meantime they will do an eviction if not paid. She also has credit cards etc. any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have my own rent and bills and cannot take on hers as well. No siblings, it’s just me. I want her to have the best care possible.

Thank you all SO much!  I was worried I would be responsible - my name is not on anything.  Yes, the mobile home park is threatening eviction if lot rent isn't paid but I guess in the big scheme of things an eviction won't hurt my mom at this point.  I appreciate all your help!  This is a first for my mom and I and I don't have anyone to help me with the decisions except my son who adores his grandma and is still in a bit of denial that she won't be coming home.

When I helped my totally broke and deep in debt in-laws I just notified the mortgage company that they were in a nursing home and on Medicaid and let them do a foreclosure. We then removed and sold everything of value (for cash) and kept it to stock their Resident's Trust in the NH. So, if you're able I would take out any and all of your mom's sellable and sentimental possessions in the rental before abandoning it. Don't sell anything that is listed on her Medicaid application, like if she had a vehicle. Get your name off of anything joint. If you're not PoA do not sign any paperwork at the NH! If you are PoA there is a certain way to sign the paperwork indicating you are only signing as the PoA and are not personally liable for any costs. The cc companies will stop calling once she no longer has a mobile phone (if she had one) and they won't know her new number at the NH. Being on Medicaid in the NH means she will get all the same care and attention as the other residents, she will just not have a private room ever. May you receive peace in your heart as you help your mom settle in her new situation.

You have to relinquish mom's income to nursing home, no choice. They may give you a bit of leeway on the lot rental until mobile home sells. What is the value of the mobile home? Stop paying lot rent if necessary, it will take time to get it out of there. Or if worth something mobile home park may place lien on it or take ownership of it.

Notify CC companies that mom has entered a nursing home and is indigent. Hopefully, you are not also listed on those cards.

If all she has is the mobile home. she is basically judgement proof, so I would just let the CC debt go, they will call, they will threaten don't respond.

As for the mobile home if it is not worth a lot of money, I would stop paying and let them evict her. Sounds like she is on rental property, so to her the land has no value.

Most likely, Medicaid will end up paying a ton more than the mobile home is worth.

You? Do not pay a thing towards her bills. Let the chips fall where they may.
