To be able to qualify for Medicaid you need to spend down to $2000 before Medicaid is suppose to take effect. The money you are trying to spend down can only go for the person filing for Medicaid. It can't be given as a gift.
In my case, I private paid 2 months of care in a LTC. That used up the rest of Moms money. So I was under the 2k needed.
Now this is for care in a NH. Not sure about just for insurance coverage. I don't remember my nephew having to spend down but then he had no money.
