Two years ago my mother was diagnosed with dementia so she had to stay in a memory care unit. Then her doctor said that she had brain cancer and need to be put in hospice for she only had at the most for months left, Now two years later I have no funds left to add to what she gets from social security and I don't know what else to do the doctor who also is in charge of the hospice facility gets paid through her medicare but now I find myself owing more and more.

Assisted Living is NOT covered by Medicaid UNLESS your state has a MEDICAID WAIVER slot open. In our state (Montana) these are very hard to come by. It sounds like your best shot would be to get your mom qualified for Medicaid and for the nursing home or dementia care facility. I don't think it is worth your time to try for the Medicaid Waiver. You can get her qualified in less than a month, in most cases. Go talk to your area's Council on Aging or something like that. Or even her current facility's social worker. You'll have to go through all the motions with any assets she has that aren't allowed for Medicaid, if she has any (stocks, etc.). Is there progressive care at the place she is now? If so, that will flow nicely. If not, get her on a list for a nursing home or dementia care facility as soon as possible while you are getting Medicaid going. Blessings to you as you proceed. I just did it for both my inlaws and it wasn't fun but it is very satisfying now to have them all tucked into the nursing home (they were in Assisted Living for 2 years in a progressive care facility).

My aunt was in an assisted living facility on a pay as you go basis. She could stay there as long as she could pay. They did not accept Medicare. Therefore, when her money got low I moved her to a NH that accepted Medicare. When the money was gone the NH walked me through the system. It was easy. I was her guardian. She passed away last week after being a resident there for ten years.

Absolutely. Being your Mom has been at this facility for 2 years and hope they either have or can turn your Mom's room into a Medicaid bed, and there are no funds remaining, you need to turn to Medicaid for help. Although there is a good chance - she will have to be moved. Good luck to you.

My mother is in an ALF with Hospice care as well and she receives SSA, VA AND Medicaid. SO, I would say, is it a hassle ..yes..but it is worth the help you receive. Good luck!

Time to have Mom accepted by Medicaid. Maybe in your State you might be able to get a voucher which will help to continue to pay for Assisted Living or Hospice facility, or not. Medicaid will pay for nursing home care. It's something worth looking into.
