My brother put my mother on the meals-on-wheels program recently. I would like to know if there is a charge for this program or if the recipient (my Mom) would just donate money each time. I have called and written their offices a few times, but I get no answer. My brother is not answering my emails due to being(dysfunctional :( .... so if anyone knows, I would like to know so I can pay for them.
Thank you.

Oops, you asked specifically about meals-on-wheels. They did tell me it was $3.00 as a donation. That could be paid by the person receiving the meal or someone could sponsor that person.

Back when I checked on it for my parents and mil it was $3.00 per meal as a donation. We were going to take care of cost but mil refused all and it was not available in my parent’s area. So now I just cook meals when I can or purchase meals of similar value from store or fast food place. I do this about three times a week. Like on Monday, I purchased them a turkey and potatoes weight watcher dinner ($4 a piece) from our local market. Than on Wednesday a rotisserie chicken ($5) to go along with collard greens and corn bread I cooked. On Friday pepper steak ($6 a piece) from lunch menu at local restaurant. They could eat off of that a couple of times the last two. With that being said, I'm sick of trying to meal plan for my family and others. But so far, parents don't complain about eats. Now if my son would stop being so fussy.

We also have in our area what is called Stewpot. The cost of this is free but of course mil wanted no parts of it as well lol and not available in parents area. I have forgotten the name of the last one (something faith ministries) which was going to cost $10 a month but it was going to be food that you had to bring home and cook yourself.

Anonymus, I was curious about how Meals on Wheels worked so I went to their main website. I couldn't find any info about Seniors paying for meals. Best bet is to call their main headquarters at 1-888-998-6325. Hope this helps.

My dad had Meals on Wheels and while I don't remember the cost (I think it might have been donation weekly) the fee was nominal. If your mom is on the Meals on Wheels program ask the person who brings the meals.

The program is partially funded by the federal government and also from grants and donations from businesses and individuals. If you can't figure out how to donate directly for your mom you could contact MOWAA on their website and find how how to donate. The program can be free for low income seniors and disabled younger people. Some cities have community meals at places like community centers. This provides more socialization along with the nutrition.

Yes, I have googled, I have called/no answer and I have emailed. No response. I don't want to trouble her with having to give a donation. There are days she is so sick she cannot even sign for it. I want to donate for her. Yes New York here.

I wouldn't worry about it.. If they want payment they will notify her someway..

You can Google your question: are meals on wheels free in NY?

Yes. I am in New York and I have written and called and cannot reach them. I would like to pay on my Mom's behalf, if that is possible. It would just make things easier. So some charge and others take donations?

In SE and mid-Michigan, the cost is $3 per meal, paid for by the individual (or family). AAA subsidizes the balance.

Payment is expected either weekly or biweekly.

It definitely is not a free service in Michigan.

It's probably free. Call the local MOW office and ask. Or check with the county aging office. I don't think donations are even expected.
