There can be the types of dementia diagnosed that cause outbursts of anger and unreasonable behavior. If the change was sudden it could be due to strokes, mini strokes, Urinary Tract infections, and etc. There can be deep depression manifesting as anger, very common. People always think depression manifests as withdrawal and sadness, but fully 50% of the time it comes through as anger. Is Dad losing control of his body functions, his living situation, his finances, etc?
