Find Care & Housing
Another thought - my sister was an animal lover. One of her friends donated a brick for I believe a walkway at an animal shelter. Each donated brick was inscribed with a notation of that donation. I thought it was a unique way to commemorate the friendship as well as a lifelong love of animals.

I often thought that someday I'd like to visit that facility and see what must be an extraordinary sight - all those bricks inscribed in memory of someone who loved animals.

If your friend had similar passions, you might even consider volunteering at a local branch of the charity to provide services in lieu of money.

Contact the family and ask what the person's favorite charities were. Typically envelopes are preprinted and provided at funeral homes during viewing and the service. Most likely the family has some extra envelopes - you could choose from a choice of charities.

If none were listed, and you know what charities your friend supported, you can also just look them up online to get an address and mail them a check. Just make sure that you note it's on behalf of your friend.

Did your family friend have a favorite charity? If so, you can usually go on-line to that charity and make a donation in the memory of that friend.
