My father was off Medicaid as of March 1 because he inherited money from my mother from the sale of their house. He needs to private pay for 4 months until he is eligible again.

The nursing home billed us for the last four days in February even though his rejection letter says effective 3/1.

Has anyone experienced something like this and can they provide a reason?
Of course I am working with someone in billing to figure this out, but if anyone might know of a reason for this, I’d love to know.

The only explanation the Medicaid administrator at his NH could give me was this is how we do things. Frankly, that is not good enough.

I hate dealing with this crap.

I have dealt with 3 " skilled nursing facilities " since January of 2024, regarding my mother. She IS on Medicaid and on a program called "Cost share protection" Tho my situation is somewhat different, my experience with the " Billing depts(s)" was Horriffic. I learned much from the whole (ordeal) as well as consulted an "Eldercare attorney". I believe I saw some affiliated with this website. I did indeed win the battle(s). It's most unfortunate that many of these facilities try to intimidate for pymt they are not entitled to. They're bottam dollar drives this behavior. " Authorizations are extremely time and money consuming for them and they count on residents and there families NOT know any better and just paying them. I even gotta VM telling me they'd seek legal action against me as POA in misappropriation of my Mother's funds if I did not pay them! Not only that but they were billing for a single room when my mother shared 2 rooms while there!! Can you say Fraudulent?! At any rate, you should beable to get a Free consultation with an Eldercare attorney. Good luck and DON'T back down from these greedy Bureaucrats!!

Carefully read the Medicaid contract and ask Medicaid how your dad had signed up for the facility placement.

Stabs in the dark here.
You say “ billed us”.
I am guessing that at some point a billing address was given that was not your parents’ address. I say this because I know your Dad is in NY. It’s a long story why I am guessing this .

Another guess is if you or a sibling signed as guarantor .

Take out the contact and read it. If it's not mentioned in there, then I would go by only what the Medicaid letter states as the end date. But, most likely the billing cycle and protocol is probably mentioned so before others start responding you need to see what it says. When my youngest son was a boy he made up a word: Disgustipated. I think it was a mash-up of disgusted and constipated. Twenty years later my husband and I both use this word regularly to the point where we forget that others have no idea what that word is. I feel disgustipated when I have to do deal with that crap, too.
