I just started receiving SSI at the age of 65, as I have been unable to work for some time. I had always thought that mother, who is 84 and receives SS and pension, would eventually live with my husband and me. She is ready to move in with us, and I am worried about violating a rule. Can she still live with me?

You are receiving SSI because of a disability, is that right? And you will still have that disability when your mother moves in, right?

Will mother be paying you? Will it be more than the extra costs of having her there? If she is paying for her share of the groceries and heating bill etc., I don't see how that would change things. If she is paying you more and it brings your income above a qualifying level for the SSI benefit, then I guess it might have an impact.

Do you have a case worker for SSI that you could discuss this with in detail?

It is really not going to matter I would say, income is the same, and mom's income is the same, no up in amount incoming for either of you, mom will use her foods stamps to contribute as if she were living alone, keep it simple and don't worry about it, don't think there is a significant amount of income to worry about.

You will lose SSI if you attempt to collect aid and attendance in caring for her.

Food stamps are usually based on household income, she might lose all or part of it.

She would probably lose a rent subsidy if she is getting one.
