Does anybody know the answer to this? Our long term insurance does not cover the full cost of local nursing homes. Does anyone know if Medicaid will supplement the rest and leave the “community spouse” enough to live on? If my husband needs a nursing home, and our insurance doesn’t cover it completely, the remaining cost out of pocket would leave me with almost zero income.

I believe the LTC payment would be counted as part of the resident's cost of care contribution, similar to social security, pension, etc. LTC policies vary, with some paying a certain amount per day (for a certain period), while others have a total set amount; that kind of policy would pay the full daily cost until the cap is reached, then the Medicaid application can be done. As gladimhere stated, Medicaid has provisions so that the community spouse is left enough to live on.

My dad was left as the community spouse when my mother required Medicaid. The first part of her NH stay was paid by a LTC policy but it was amazing how quickly its benefits ran out. After a very short time as private pay she was awarded Medicaid. Her SS check was taken for her care also. My dad kept his entire SS, all retirement monies, and all of his assets. He had to sell one car and keep one but otherwise his finances changed little.

Was this a state partnership plan?

You need to see an elder law attorney to assist. Medicaid will not leave the community spouse indigent. Medicaid differs from state to state.
